“When one dies, I usually adopt another in his honor”, said the American Steve Greg who, after the death of his first pet, decided in 2012 that he would dedicate his life to adopting and caring for older dogs and other animals that have problems with by finding new homes.
About twenty animals currently live at the 59-year-old’s house in Denver, Colorado, USA. He has 11 senior dogs, four chickens, two rabbits, two ducks, one turkey and a miniature pot-bellied pig named Bikini (“who just happens to think she’s one of the dogs”).
“After losing my dog, I wasn’t functioning well. I decided to go to a shelter and adopt a dog that was probably going to die quickly,” he said, adding that he noticed that older dogs are often neglected in shelters, as potential adopters consider them smaller. desirable and are usually the first to be euthanized if not adopted relatively quickly.
Adopts only older dogs
But Greg saw their adoption differently.
“In a way, adopting an older animal would give purpose to Wolfgang’s death; he died, but because of it, another dog came to life,” he said.
Steve then took home the oldest dog in the shelter, a chihuahua named Eeiore who had knee problems and a heart murmur. The dog quickly healed upon arrival at Greg’s home. They were together for the next six years. However, he then realized that one dog was not enough for him. So he adopted another older dog — and then another and another.
